You know… legitimate Italians can be pretty dark skinned, and whether or not he has any Italian in his blood is not exactly known.He could very well be half and half. Why don’t you go ahead and just ask Jo? See what she says, if it bothers you so much. Also, the surname, Zabini is pretty Italian sounding wouldn’t you say? Oh, and, it’s really not up to anyone, what authors of fanfiction come up with… it’s their story, and theirs alone. So you should butt out. I don’t even write, but I can tell you all that you’re being a little callous about all of this.

Hi. Let me adress that “callous” bit first:

No, I am not. I’m addressing what I consider to be blatant (but not necessarily malicious) white-washing in a fandom I adore. The fact that I took time to speak on it, on MY tumblr - however briefly - shows that I am concerned. 

The character of Zabini might very well be “half and half” as you so elegantly phrased it. Being bi- or multi-racial does not negate my original point. Seeing as Jo Rowling was responsible in part for the selection of the actors who portrayed her characters, I’d consider the casting of Louis Cordice her seal of approval. 

Better yet, we could just use this direct quote from  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (p 143, US version)  ”a tall black boy with high cheekbones and long, slanting eyes”. So if I asked Jo, since it does bother me so much, I think Jo might tell me to read what she wrote.

Yes, fanfic is spawned from the mind of the author, but I’ve yet to see a single work where the plot benefits from this alteration. This isn’t making Draco a 1/4 Veela. And you know what else? I’m allowed to comment. I’ve yet to see a story where an author requests that people don’t comment on or review their work. So I did, on my tumblr, just like you saw my post and commented on yours.
